I've rarely yielded a machete, but spent years walking behind workers whose job it was to open a path through the undergrowth with them. Such a useful tool. And I've watched how adept people are at cutting the top off of a coconut as you describe in detail, in both Latin America and in Africa.
The native coconut pickers here slice the top/side of the coconut in a single swipe for a perfect drinking hole. I suspect I am a year away from the necessary sharpening skills, and another year from the perfect aim :-)
